Having a dorm was like having a small studio apartment, Sadie decided, but like. Cramped.
The room was narrow, but long, obviously designed to have two dorm beds crowded into it. Sadie only had the one, jacked high off the ground with a dresser crammed underneath for her clothes. There was room for storage, but not by a lot. A desk and standing wardrobe shared the opposite wall, and as far as furnishings, that wasโฆ it.
The far wall was taken up by an enormous window, through which Sadie was enjoying the symphony of a thunderstorm as she decided on how to add to her new bedroom. Sheโd already conjured a cozy black futon where the other dorm bed should have been, and a small fridge to keep snacks and drinks in. Her decorations littered the walls and desk, shades of black and gray and red that reminded her of her apartment in Hell. Somehow, it was starting to feel homey.
The bathroom was another thing entirely. That, Sadie supposed, was the benefit of new luxury dorms; sharing a Jack-and-Jill with the dorm beside her. Sheโd already put out a black turntable with her soap and a few kitschy cups full of her toothbrush, makeup brushes, and q-tips, and had set up her toiletries and makeup in the little cabinet beneath her sink.
She was just setting up the little stack of plastic drawers, humming absently to herself, when the opposite door opened.
The girl standing in the door yelped at the sight of her. Sadie just smiled up at her, taking her in; she was tall and skinny, almost scrawny, but her style was impeccable, a button down menโs shirt over light wash skinny jeans and gray converse. Her blonde hair flitted around her shoulders, her green eyes a little too big for her angular face, her cheekbones high and proud, her front teeth and incisors a little longer than the rest of her teeth.
Pretty, Sadie thought, and waved. โHi!โ The other girl waved awkwardly back, so Sadie continued, โIโm Sadie, your suitemate.โ
โHey,โ the other girl said, clutching her chest and panting a little. โScottie Langford.โ She blew out a breath, like she was having trouble keeping it all in. โSorry for screaming. You startled me.โ
โMy bad,โ Sadie laughed, brushing off her jeans and scrambling to her feet to hold out a hand. โItโs nice to meet you.โ
โYeah,โ Scottie said, shaking her hand. Her grip was firm and sure, her hand completely engulfing Sadieโs. โYou too. Uhโฆโ she glanced down toward Sadieโs project, eyes lingering. โYouโre way ahead of us with theโโ she waved halfheartedly at Sadieโs bathroom cabinetโ โunpacking, and stuff.โ
โMoved in this morning,โ Sadie lied. She tilted her head to see into the other dorm, but it was just the standard issue desk and wardrobe in her line of sight. โYou need any help?โ
โOh! Uhโฆโ Scottie glanced over her shoulder. โAsh! You want help from our suitemate?โ
โSure,โ came the somewhat strained reply. โMaybe she can help with this god damn curtain rod, seeing as youโre so scared of heights you wonโt even stand on your toes.โ
โHey!โ
Sadie just laughed. โIโve got you,โ she said, and swept past Scottie as she stepped back to let Sadie through.
Ash was a little shorter, more of an hourglass figure in her jeans and camisole, and fighting two battles simultaneouslyโ one with the aforementioned curtain rod, which was visibly too long for her to hold up straight even with the help of her short stepladder; the other with the mass of reddish-gold curls that hung halfway down her back, untied and wild. The arms and half of her cheek Sadie could make out were a constellation of light freckles.
Pretty, Sadie thought again, finding herself smiling. โHope you donโt mind me climbing on your desk,โ she said, and promptly calmbored up onto the desk wedged into the corner under their window. She snatched up the drooping end of the curtain rod and tucked it into the command hook opposite Ash. Now that she could see Ashโs face, Sadie could see her strong nose, her plush cheeks, her rose petal lips, her nose piercing. More freckles, too.
So, she had pretty roommates. Nice.
โYouโre a saint,โ Ash said, and Sadie had to bite her tongue til she tasted blood to keep from cackling.
โFirst time Iโve been called that,โ she admitted dryly. Ash laughed, the noise crackly like she didnโt use it very often. โIโm Sadie. Nice to meet you.โ
โAshlynnโ or Ash,โ Ash said, coming down from the step ladder. โIโm not picky. Whatโre you in for?โ
Sadie didnโt bother getting down off the desk, dropping cross-legged right onto it. Neither of the girls seemed to mind, and neither said anything to deter her. โChild psych major, music and opera double minor.โ
โOh, ouch,โ Scottie said, grimacing. โI thought your criminal justice major was rough,โ she said to Ash.
โCriminal justice is easy,โ Ash scoffed. She regarded a box on her bed, scowled, and tore it open.
โNot as easy as field hockey.โ
A lot clicked into place for Sadie as she watched them interact. Scottieโs sport major explained why she was built the way she was, athletic and lithe, with that firm handshake. Ash, though, had sharp hazel eyes that Sadie imagined cataloged everything she saw and kept it safe in her memory. In all the ways her build was soft and feminine, her eyes were like cameras scanning over Sadie, over Scottie, over the room. Sadie would have loved to get in her head for a bit.
They were also incredibly familiar with each other. There was none of the awkwardness or tension between Ash and Scottie that Sadie could feel them exuding when they spoke to her.
โField hockey and criminal justice, huh?โ Sadie watched them both face her, both midway through unearthing things from boxes on their beds. โHowโd a jock and a nerd end up friends?โ
Ash snorted, and Scottie blushed. โBold of you to assume weโre not both nerds,โ Ash said, sending Scottie a sly look.
โYeah, weโreโโ but Scottie cut off, fumbling something and sending her box careening to the ground. โShit!โ
Sadie leapt from the desk just in time to catch a picture frame mere inches from the floor, the only breakable thing sheโd seen as it went down. โGot it!โ She handed it back, still half crouched where sheโd landed from the desk, and then began to gather the rest of the fallen hodgepodge.
โIโm pretty sure the only time I have any coordination is on the field,โ Scottie lamented, accepting a handful of books from Sadie. โThanks.โ
Sadie hummed. โI was catastrophic as a teenager,โ she admitted. โNever knew where my body started and ended. Backhanded a few people by accident more times than I can count.โ
Scottie giggled, and even Ash huffed a laugh, organizing everything neatly on her own bed.
โWhat changed?โ Scottie asked.
Sadie shrugged. In truth, sheโd died, become a sex demon, and her movements had since been fluid in a way they hadnโt been during her first life. Where sheโd been painfully unaware of her body before, she was hyperaware of it now, able to move it and change it and use it in ways sheโd never been able to in life. โGrew into it, I guess. Took some dance classes and martial arts.โ Not untrue, but certainly not the entire story.
Both girls seemed to take it in stride, though. โMartial arts will do that,โ Ash said evenly, then promptly turned and tossed a book onto Scottieโs bed, perfectly avoiding Sadieโs waist. โThatโs yours.โ
โI was wondering where that went.โ
Sadie snickered, leaning against Scottieโs bed with her arms crossed over her chest. โSo, I take it you knew each other before today?โ
โOh, yeah,โ Scottie said. Sadie got the feeling Scottie was the chatterbox between the two of them, and turned her face politely toward her. โWeโve been friends since, like, middle school. Did the same tee ball club or whatever it was, and then I think I hit her with a hockey stick in gym, and weโve been inseparable ever since. Thick as thieves, or whatever the saying is.โ
Sadie felt a sudden pang in her chest, and hoped her smile looked fond, and notโ whatever she was feeling, now. โThatโs so sweet. Iโm not in touch with anyone from my high school, anymore.โ
โLame,โ Scottie said. Ash just hummed, shooting Sadie a commiserating look. โGuess youโll have to hang out with us, then.โ
Sadie clasped her hand to her breastbone dramatically, with an overdone gasp for effect. โOh, no! The horror! Becoming friends with people I have to live with for the next year!โ
โOh, I like you,โ Ash said, tossing something toward her. Sadie caught it easily, realizing it was a candy bar as she turned it over.
Ah, she thought. The talker and the feeder. โThanks.โ
โYou a freshman?โ Ash asked. She tossed another book to Scottieโs bed.
โTransfer junior,โ Sadie said automatically.
Scottie snorted. โAny reason you chose the most haunted college in the US to transfer to?โ
Haunted? Oh, Sadie was going to have words the next time she saw Lucifer.
As if on cue, a deep, distant rumble of thunder purred through the silence.
โThe vibes,โ Sadie said casually, watching both girlsโ reactions. Ash gave her a flat look, which transferred to Scottie in a second.
Scottie, who was grinning madly, like Sadie had just told her a piece of juicy gossip. โPlease, please tell me you like cryptid lore,โ she said, practically vibrating with poorly-concealed excitement.
โOh god,โ Sadie said on a breathy laugh. โTell me weโve got Bigfoot legends here.โ
โNot another one,โ Ash whispered, and Sadie burst out laughing, full on chest laughs that had her gripping herself around the middle, trying to stop the wheezing.
โItโs perfect ghost story weather, Ash,โ Scottie snapped, but she was still grinning. She grabbed Ash by the arms, forcing the shorter girl to face her, and gave her an excited little shake. โSadie here doesnโt know about Summervilleโs cryptid scene!โ
โLet her live in peace,โ Ash begged, unfazed by Scottieโs manhandling.
Sadie felt her phone buzz in her pocket as she watched the girls play-argue. At a glance, she saw the name Nikita flash across her screen, and an overly excited (all caps) message: WHAT DOES LUCIFER MEAN BY โYOU WENT TO COLLEGEโ?
Well. Good news sure traveled fast in Hell.
โNot to pun,โ Sadie said, interrupting something Scottie was emphatically pleading with Ash about, โbut Iโll need to take a rain check on the cryptid bonding.โ She wiggled her phone by her shoulder. โMeeting my cousin for dinner before he heads back home.โ
โAh,โ Ash said, disentangling herself from Scottieโs hands. โHelped you moved in and dipped, huh?โ
Sadie snorted. Nikita would. โYou got it. You ladies good here? Need anything?โ
โI think weโre good.โ Ash looked to Scottie, who nodded.
โWeโll catch up later,โ Sadie promised, making her way back through the Jack-and-Jill. โI want to hear about Summervilleโs cryptid scene.โ
โDonโt encourage her!โ Ashโs voice called, over Scottieโs gleeful cheers. Sadie just laughed to herself, shutting her own bathroom door before vanishing on the spot.
